A comprehensive search and rescue mission is actively ongoing in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing boats transporting humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Military Search Efforts Launched

The Mexican government has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying at least nine total crew members, according to a navy statement.

The ships had been projected to arrive in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

Background of Aid to the Island

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country struggles through widespread national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are fitted with suitable navigational gear and signalling equipment," a spokesperson for the convoy stated.

The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Recent Aid Mission

Just days before, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tons of donated goods to the island.

That ship, called "Granma 2.0" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to start the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and food.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of initiatives to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the country came into effect.

International organizations have since highlighted ""severe" supply shortages, with over fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy tensions have intensified over the past months, with statements from several leaders emphasizing the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.

In response to previous proposals, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to find the sailboats and guarantee the security of the people on board.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
