Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
