Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now plans to campaign alongside the former governor in areas where he maintains strong support.

“It's essential to really wake up the communities of color that have been affected by gentrification on how critical this race is,” the mayor remarked.

Adams continued, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest internationally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.

During a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development followed a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
