European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
