Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.
A freshly coined term came to light several months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a minor who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that violations are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, just as it refutes each claim it is charged with. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what unity resembles.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that was originally built on peace has now become a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
