American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to weather and other issues.

More than three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary said he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," he said in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be delayed due to a lack of workers - among the peak after the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in the past.
