We are checking images and video posted earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the images originated was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
