Fury Explodes as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Backlash
Personalities from across the partisan aisle and the Hollywood world are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Statement
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
This is a appalling and vile comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from His Own Party
Some Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared others in his party to justify the statements.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the shooting of a different political figure.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
