Harsh Winter Storms Take 5 Victims in Gaza Amid Dire Living Situations in Temporary Camps.

Strong cold-season gusts caused walls to collapse upon fragile shelters sheltering Palestinians uprooted by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 people. These deaths highlights the perilous living conditions that persist after over 24 months of intense airstrikes and critical shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides Little Respite from Harsh Weather

Although a ceasefire has been in effect from last fall, humanitarian organizations report that residents broadly lack the sufficient housing necessary to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, reported on this week that the dead include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of hypothermia during the night.

"International actors has enabled us to witness death in every possible way," said Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to Shifa hospital, 3 members of a one household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre tall wall collapsed onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least 5 additional people were injured in the event.

Family members on Tuesday started clearing the debris that had buried their loved ones and reconstructing the tent shelters for those who remained.

Aid Efforts and Continuing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothes as well as food and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of the population reside in improvised shelters since their homes were turned into rubble over the course of the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough building supplies are reaching Gaza during the truce.

Fatality Figures After the Truce

Local health authorities, part of the administration, reports more than 440 people have been killed by gunfire and their bodies taken to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The ministry maintains detailed casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by international bodies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, stated on Tuesday that at least one hundred children below eighteen years old – 60 boys and forty girls – had been killed after the truce began due to military operations, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, artillery fire and employment of bullets. Those figures, he explained, reflected incidents where sufficient details had been compiled to justify documentation, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He added that many hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"While 'bombings and gunfire have decreased' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now calls quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe anywhere else," he concluded.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of over two million individuals has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and storms at bay while facing lack of assistance and a lack of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently needed throughout the colder season. It’s the third cold season after the conflict between the state and Hamas began on 7 October 2023, when fighters stormed into southern Israel and killed around 1,200 people and abducted two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over 71,400 people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
