Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He fought the legal system and the legal system prevailed.

Sixty days following receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” the nation's democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally appears destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The convicted plotter – who's been living under residential detention in his residence while a series of judicial steps and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be jailed in the next few days, amidst mounting talk that he will be transferred to a notorious maximum security prison.

Historical Remarks on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the conservative former military man exhibited little mercy for the country's jailed individuals.

“Why should we give those lowlifes a easy time?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be screwed, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “Should you not wish to end up in prison, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”

Jail Facility Debate

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, several of whom this week visited the facility in an apparent bid to discourage the supreme court from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, stated he expected the 70-year-old politician to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and feared his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal ailments – the consequence of a almost deadly assault during the last presidential campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he added, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells holding forty prisoners: “That is virtually one square metre per detainee.

“We conversed to the convicts and they protest, naturally, of the horrible meals,” remarked the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

The senator isn't the only voice expressing views prior to the former president’s expected incarceration.

Penning in a major publication, one more backer, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the biggest unfairness in its record”.

“It represents an wrong that erodes the hearts of many of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

Varied Popular Response

This could be correct considering the substantial backing Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. However his anticipated incarceration has also warmed the spirits of millions others who feel he should be incarcerated for plotting to stop his successor from taking power – and even conspiring to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the sitting administration's political party, said: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to receive dignified handling – but dignified treatment behind bars. He cannot carry on being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years celebrating the harsh handling of inmates, had abruptly realized to their privileges. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly asserted that civil liberties should not be for lawbreakers – decided to inspect a jail to learn what conditions are actually like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, insulting treatment”.

Likely Prison Conditions

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now holds about fourteen thousand detainees, his expected location appears to be a close jail for officers and other “special” prisoners known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are far more adequate than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the impressive presidential palace, about 20 kilometers away.

As per reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – roughly the size of a couple of car spots – and includes a 12 sq metre bathroom with a shower and a 12 square meter balcony. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a television and also a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were donated by his loved ones,” the report stated.

Political Responses

Senator Lucas denounced the speculated idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his fate in the {
