Liverpool's Captain Concedes Squad is in a Mess, Questions Players on Responsibility
Virgil van Dijk has issued a scathing assessment of Liverpool's woeful title defence, admitting the reigning champions are in a mess and failing head coach Slot while doubting whether all squad members is owning up for the current downturn.
The Dutch defender struggled to hold back his anger after Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest, a result that left Liverpool in the lower section of the Premier League table with a deficit in goals. Poor Second Half and Defensive Lapses
Van Dijk labeled Liverpool’s start to the second half as “not good enough” and admitted “panic kicked in” as soon as the Forest player gave the visitors the lead. Forest’s opener was the ninth concession Liverpool have allowed from dead-ball situations in the Premier League this season.
“There was a great build-up to the match but in a game you are dealing with facts and the facts are we gave away a set piece in the opening period and a terrible goal at the beginning after the break,” stated Van Dijk. “We are certainly failing the manager, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. Start with self-reflection and then you help each other, you help each other get out of this mess because at the moment it is a mess – that’s just a fact.
Van Dijk’s Demands: Take Responsibility
Van Dijk usually speaks the press after a match as part of his role as team leader. This time was distinct, however. His voice was much louder – audible enough that any player in the Anfield tunnel could hear him – and he expressed visible fury while urging the dressing room to respond. “You should be angry,” he insisted. “The main thing for me is that each individual has to be accountable.” Asked whether this is occurring, Van Dijk answered: “I don’t know. But you have to do that. That's crucial I expect the boys to do. It’s not easy during tough periods but we must act if we want to get out of this.”
Summer Signings and Broader Issues
Liverpool spent almost £450 million to strengthen a championship-winning team in the summer but have gone backwards, with several high-profile signings failing to make an impact so far. The captain insisted that Liverpool’s problems go beyond the recent additions. “It’s tough for everyone,” he said. “My expectation is for everyone to be answerable on the pitch. This is necessary in order to push each other, to improve collectively. If a teammate presses, you have to follow the press. It’s basic things but it’s not happening enough.”
Appeal to Stick Together
The Dutchman added: “In the current term we lack any consistency, we allow excessive scores, we are being out-fought and everyone is responsible for it and I trust this is recognized. It's vital to take responsibility to turn this around and it is easy to assign blame but unity is essential. We have been through it together and claimed the title and everyone was part of it, and when you go through a challenging phase you have to stick together and not point fingers.
“Show character and confront the hardship and go again, again and again because if you want to give up then you are in the wrong environment in my view, because Liverpool has been going through numerous challenges over recent seasons and we’ve consistently emerged of it. However, that doesn't imply it is easy, it’s tiring but there is only one path forward.”

Next up in the Premier League is a visit to London Stadium next Sunday, after the Champions League fixture of the Dutch side in the Champions League. Van Dijk commented: “Wednesday is another opportunity so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? No, I'll go home and analyze how we can turn this around and hopefully that is what everyone is doing as well.”
