Mikel Arteta Admits Future Role Hinges on Securing Silverware.
On the eve of his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to winning major honors.
The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge
The former Arsenal captain took over on the 20th of December in 2019 and managed to steer the team to an cup win not long after. But, that early success remains his sole significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.
“I can,” Arteta responded in response to a query about remaining in charge after his current deal. “But it’s about today. And many things have to happen in the next few months as well to deserve that opportunity.”
Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal played the day after his role was made public.
League Position and Pressure
Given that trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This potential shift despite Arteta managing a squad that has suffered more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.
He is under a contract with 18 months to run on the extension he agreed to in 2024, but is acutely aware that results must come sooner rather than later.
The Manager's Mandate
The manager expanded, highlighting the ongoing need to justify his role. “I think a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”
He stated further, commending the unwavering support from the club's ownership, while singling out the team's buy-in as most crucial. “At the end, the most important ones are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, hunger for knowledge and give the maximum to the team.”
Squad Setbacks
The squad faces the upcoming game coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a muscle problem that is likely to sideline him for a few weeks.
Confidence in the Path
Despite the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “focus and dialogue” are completely changed from when he initially took over.
He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “You look at the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”
In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
