The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
