The Diamond Family Unofficial Game of the Year Awards for The Past Year
So, how was this year in your home? Was it all as good as people post on online? Overflowing with academic success for the children and riotous dress-up gatherings for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a ocean of disappointment with only occasional fun moments? Could any part be actually real, or have we all become seven-fingered synthetic personas with perfect smiles?
I've corralled the family for a reflection, ready or not, to reflect on the most important thing in any given year: which releases we enjoyed the most. Without further ado:
Release Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"It’s not my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for reasonable healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In the actual world."
Title Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He was offended that I suggested it. I respect that.
Release Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into drama school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her character has a blooming utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her eldest sister has in real life.
Game the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Game I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am engaging in this to toughen him up so he can grow up and play games for grownups. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted card game digital pastime, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a iconic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my issues so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this stunning, original game and I just lacked the time or headspace to give it what it needed earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the early morning after evening drinks.
Title That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was the previous year's breakout game, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is incredible. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so creative it has become a game I would happily play constantly. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an definite high-water mark of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Game I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a minor pile-on when I wrote about how a glitch in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that as written, because I appreciate the effort, and he is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a bastard-hard non-linear thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". What a joy. I acknowledge that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Debate between questionable alliances that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both ethically dubious and repugnant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names bellowed from the back door at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or doomscrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
