The Mayor-Elect confirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his victory in November.
"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will forever remain within me and my work," he added.
Campaign Controversy
During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he is from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
