The people of Israel observe second anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
People have come together throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"The aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled official memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations gathered in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the discussions are "tough and have still not achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the two sides.
Key Issues in Negotiations
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- After-conflict governance of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose brother lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place feels like home anymore and until every captive return no one will feel safe."
"Once we see all home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
In front of the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Protester one woman remarked: "We must do every compromise needed for the captives to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."
Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of Israelis prefer the war to finish in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the music event, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From the site, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli attacks carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the dusk arrives, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.
"We are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had accepted the remains of several people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated another two dead people had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the south, medical staff reported.
