Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such medications must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
