The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates club a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," said Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
